Robert Edwards and Patrick Steptoe, who collaborated on the procedure, are considered to be the pioneers of IVF.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">In 2010, Robert Edwards received the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine \u201cfor the development of in-vitro fertilization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">In July 2013, an American couple had the first baby to be born through IVF as a result of next-generation DNA sequencing, a new way of screening embryos that improves IVF success rates and significantly reduces the cost of treatment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">So far, more than 10 million IVF\/ICSI and frozen embryo transfer babies have been born throughout the world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b><strong>Fast facts about in-vitro fertilization (IVF)<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400\">\n<li>In-vitro fertilization (IVF) can help achieve pregnancy when other treatments have not worked.<\/li>\n<li>The process involves fertilizing an egg outside the body, and implanting it to continue the pregnancy.<\/li>\n<li>One percent of babies born in the United States are conceived through IVF.<\/li>\n<li>There is a higher chance of a multiple birth with IVF.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">DNA sequencing technology helps doctors screen embryos created by IVF to identify those most likely to lead to successful pregnancies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b><strong>Candidates<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">In-vitro fertilization is ideal for women who have not been able to become pregnant through regular unprotected intercourse or after 12 cycles of artificial insemination.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b><strong>Success rate<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">In 2016,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nccd.cdc.gov\/drh_art\/rdPage.aspx?rdReport=DRH_ART.ClinicInfo&amp;rdRequestForward=True&amp;ClinicId=9999&amp;ShowNational=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">26 percent<\/a>\u00a0of procedures led to a live birth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">In 2010, the United Kingdom\u2019s National Health Service (NHS) estimated that the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/focusonreproduction.eu\/2016\/07\/05\/6-5-million-ivf-babies-since-louise-brown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chance of a live birth<\/a>\u00a0was:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400\">\n<li>32.2 percent for women aged under 35 years<\/li>\n<li>27.7 percent for women aged between 35 to 37 years<\/li>\n<li>20.8 percent for women aged between 38 to 39 years<\/li>\n<li>13.6 percent for women aged 40 to 42 years<\/li>\n<li>5 percent for women aged 43 to 44<\/li>\n<li>1.9 percent for women aged over 44 years<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">These statistics vary depending on where IVF is done.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b><strong>Other factors that may affect success<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Apart from age, the likelihood of success depends on factors including:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400\">\n<li>how long you have been trying to become pregnant<\/li>\n<li>the cause of the infertility<\/li>\n<li>whether or not pregnancy or a live birth has occurred before<\/li>\n<li>the strategy that will be used<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">One study, published in\u00a0<em>CMAJ Open<\/em>\u00a0in 2013, has suggested that women who have sufficient levels of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/161618.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vitamin D<\/a>\u00a0are \u201csignificantly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25077107\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more likely<\/a>\u201d to become pregnant with IVF compared with those who have lower levels of this\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/195878.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vitamin<\/a>. This happens when the ovaries over-respond to the gonadotrophins, so that too many eggs develop in the ovaries. Severe abdominal swelling and shortness of breath can result. If OHSS occurs, the doctor may suggest restarting the whole cycle with a lower dose of gonadotropin.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Research published in the\u00a0<em>BMJ<\/em>\u00a0has\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/346\/bmj.e8632\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">linked IVF with a higher risk<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/153796.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pulmonary embolism<\/a>, or blockage of the lung\u2019s main artery, and venous thromboembolism, or blood clots, during the 1st trimester of pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b><strong>Pregnancy loss<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3735152\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">leading cause<\/a>\u00a0of pregnancy loss, whether in IVF or in natural conception, is an abnormal number of chromosomes, known as chromosomal aneuploidy. Detecting aneuploidy in the egg or sperm before carrying out IVF, or in an embryo before implantation, may help increase the chance of a successful pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">In 2013, scientists announced that\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/2058915816684252\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">they had developed<\/a>\u00a0a new technology called time-lapse imaging.
